How Does Culture Influence Parents’ Choices in Parenting?
Parenting styles can vary within cultures. While one culture may identify authoritarian parenting in one way, it may be identified differently in another culture (e.g., authoritarian parenting may be considered authoritative parenting in another country) (Jones, 2025). Different cultures have different beliefs and behavioral expectations. While parents can live within the same area, their culture and their own experiences have an influence on their parenting styles. There are various ways to parent a child, and these are dependent on the cultural values that one has experienced (Jones, 2025).
Economic stress can affect the implementation of parenting styles negatively. When individuals experience economic hardship, their emotions are at an increased risk for behavioral problems, as well as an impact on their mental health (Neppl et al., 2015).
In one study, they found that economic hardship is a factor in harsher parenting. This harsher parenting then resulted in a negative impact on their children’s development. Parents who live in a higher social class and have strong finances are more likely to value and feel rewarded through their responsibilities. These ideas encourage them to work with their children to experience the same feelings and parent their children in a way where they are encouraged to be creative, responsible, etc (Holden, 2025).
As for parents who have a lower SES, they may feel like they have to comply with their work expectations, even if it does not align with their own expectations. In this case, parents may choose to parent their children in a way that demonstrates the importance of obedience and following instructions (Holden, 2025).

Limitations to Parenting Styles
Applying Western-derived categories globally allows us to better understand how parents from different cultures perceive specific parenting styles . Different cultures have different perspectives on parenting. A parent’s culture may view that children need to have specific traits to succeed in life (e.g., being more independent or interdependent). Additionally, different countries have their own structure and views on how parenting should be done (Holden, 2025).
